OVERVIEW
In this Spanish lesson I bring you three short conversations.
I’m going to guide you step by step so you can make the most of these Spanish conversations. By the time you’ve completed the three conversations, you’ll be able to order food in Spanish.
CONVERSATION 1
Step 1: play this conversation before reading its transcript or translation.
You might not be able to understand many words, if any, but listening before reading is the fastest way to develop your listening skills.
PLAY CONVERSATION 1
Step 2: play this conversation once more. Listening always pays off!
PLAY CONVERSATION 1
Step 3: now read the conversation transcript a couple of times.
READ THE TRANSCRIPT
Antonio: Buenos días, ¿tiene una mesa para cinco?
Camarero: Lo siento, está completo. ¿Pueden volver dentro de una hora?
Step 4: play the conversation while you follow the transcript. Notice how it’s all starting to make more sense.
LISTEN WHILE READING THE TRANSCRIPT
Antonio: Buenos días, ¿tiene una mesa para cinco?
Camarero: Lo siento, está completo. ¿Pueden volver dentro de una hora?
Step 5: here’s the translation. Compare the English and Spanish lines.
FAMILIARISE YOURSELF WITH THESE LINES
Antonio: Buenos días, ¿tiene una mesa para cinco?
Camarero: Lo siento, está completo. ¿Pueden volver dentro de una hora?
Anthony: Good morning, do you have a table for five?
Waiter: I’m sorry, we’re full. Can you come back in an hour?
Step 6: once you’re familiar with the translation, play the conversation again.
PLAY CONVERSATION 1
Anthony: Good morning, do you have a table for five?
Waiter: I’m sorry, we’re full. Can you come back in an hour?
Step 7: speaking time! Play the conversation once more, but this time read out the transcript along with the native speakers.
Most likely, you won’t be able to keep up with them. Don’t worry, with practice you’ll soon get there. Guaranteed!
PRESS PLAY & READ IT OUT LOUD
Antonio: Buenos días, ¿tiene una mesa para cinco?
Camarero: Lo siento, está completo. ¿Pueden volver dentro de una hora?
Step 8: try once more. Make sure you speak up, as if you were talking to someone in front of you. The idea is to imitate a real life conversation.
SAY IT AGAIN!
Antonio: Buenos días, ¿tiene una mesa para cinco?
Camarero: Lo siento, está completo. ¿Pueden volver dentro de una hora?
Step 9: to see how far you’ve got, say all the lines in Conversation 1 along with the native speakers, without looking at the transcript.
PLAY CONVERSATION 1 & SAY IT OUT LOUD
Do you want to develop your speaking skills really fast? In the next steps, you’re going to practise saying this conversation line by line.
Step 10: here you’re going to practise saying all the lines in this conversation, one by one. This exercise will allow you to focus on each line at your own pace.
Play each line and say it out loud as many times as you want. Aim at keeping up with the native speakers.
SAY LINE 1 OUT LOUD SEVERAL TIMES
Antonio: Buenos días, ¿tiene una mesa para cinco?
Anthony: Good morning, do you have a table for five?
SAY LINE 2 OUT LOUD SEVERAL TIMES
Camarero: Lo siento, está completo. ¿Pueden volver dentro de una hora?
Waiter: I’m sorry, we’re full. Can you come back in an hour?
Step 11: say all the lines in Conversation 1 once more.
PLAY THE LINES & SAY THEM OUT LOUD
Antonio: Buenos días, ¿tiene una mesa para cinco?
Camarero: Lo siento, está completo. ¿Pueden volver dentro de una hora?
Step 12: before you move on to Conversation 2, here’s one last exercise. Say all the lines in Conversation 1 along with the native speakers, without looking at the transcript.
Notice your improvement since the first time you said this conversation!
