Today we’re going to do some role playing.

We’re going to do two role playing exercises.
These exercises are the closest you’ll get to having a real conversation with a Spanish speaker, without having to pay for a private teacher. The aim of these exercises is to help you develop the confidence to speak Spanish.
Let’s start our first role playing exercise. I’m going to be María, the first speaker, and you’re going to be Ana. I’ll say my first line, and then I’ll prompt you in English. Can you tell me your line in Spanish?
María: Buenos días, Ana, ¿qué tal estás?
Anne: Fine, thanks, and you?
María: Bien.
Let’s do this same exercise once again.
María: Buenos días, Ana, ¿qué tal estás?
Anne: Fine, thanks, and you?
María: Bien.
We’re now going to listen to the original conversation. Did you get your line right?
María: Buenos días, Ana, ¿qué tal estás?
Ana: Bien, gracias, ¿y tú?
María: Bien.
Let me give you a couple of pronunciation tips to make sure you’re saying all the words correctly.
Pronunciation tip 1. Remember to say the Spanish vowels like this: a e i o u.
And pronunciation tip 2. Notice how I say the word: tú. Avoid making the T in ’tú’ sound like a CH. It’s a very common pronunciation mistake. To get it right, practice saying this word on its own: tú. Then, practice saying: ¿y tú?
Let’s do this role playing exercise again. I’ll prompt you in English:
María: Buenos días, Ana, ¿qué tal estás?
Anne: Fine, thanks, and you?
María: Bien.

Let’s now do this exercise without the prompts. Can you come up with your line in Spanish? Say it after the beep:
María: Buenos días, Ana, ¿qué tal estás?
beep
María: Bien.
And here’s the full conversation. Did you get it right?
María: Buenos días, Ana, ¿qué tal estás?
Ana: Bien, gracias, ¿y tú?
María: Bien.
Let’s now do the second role playing exercise. It’s going to be a little bit more difficult. You’re going to be María, the first speaker, and I’m going to be Ana. I’ll prompt you in English. Can you tell me your two lines in Spanish?
Mary: Good morning, Anne, how are you?
Ana: Bien, gracias, ¿y tú?
Mary: Fine.
Let’s do this same exercise once again.

Ana: Bien, gracias, ¿y tú?
Mary: Fine.
And here’s the original conversation. Did you get your two lines right?

María: Bien.
Remember the pronunciation tip I gave you before. Your vowels should sound like this: a e i o u.
Let’s say this conversation again. I’ll prompt you in English:

Let’s hear the full conversation one last time. Did you get it right?
María: Buenos días, Ana, ¿qué tal estás?
Ana: Bien, gracias, ¿y tú?
María: Bien.
