Today we’re going to do some role playing.

In last week’s lesson, you listened to a short conversation at a bar. It was a four-line conversation. Today you’re going to practice saying those four lines. You’re going to do two role playing exercises.

These exercises closely resemble having a conversation with a native speaker. The aim of these exercises is to help you develop the confidence to speak Spanish.

To make the most of today’s exercises, listen to the previous lesson, if you haven’t listened to it yet.

Let’s start our first role playing exercise. I’m going to be the waiter, the first speaker, and you’re going to be Javier, the customer. I’ll say my first line, and then I’ll prompt you in English. Can you tell me your lines in Spanish?

Buenos días, ¿qué van a tomar?

A white coffee, a black coffee, a decaf,

a milk shake, one tea with milk and an orange juice with ice.

Lo siento, no nos queda zumo de naranja.

Then, an orangeade. Oh, and also a hot chocolate.

Let me give you a couple of pronunciation tips to help you say all the words right.

Pronunciation tip number 1. Make sure you say the vowel ‘o’ correctly. Remember that the Spanish ‘o’ has a pure sound: ‘o’. Practice saying these words: solo, descafeinado, batido, zumo, hielo.

And pronunciation tip number 2. Practice saying the word ‘un’. Make sure you pronounce the Spanish ‘u’ like this: u. Say the word ‘un’ after me: un.
