This is a question I recently got from several of my newsletter subscribers. I sent out a survey asking my subscribers which topics they’re most interested in. Many of them replied that they wanted to learn about food and drink in Spanish.

Food and drink is one of the most useful topics you can master. Knowing about this topic will help you have a nicer holiday. It can also save you quite a bit of money because then you don’t have to go to the obvious places to eat and drink which are usually more expensive.

In this episode we’re going to focus on five very useful questions related to ordering food.

Talking to a waiter in Spanish – Useful questions

Let’s go through them all. Repeat after me:

¿Tiene una mesa para dos? – Do you have a table for two?
¿Qué nos recomienda? – What do you recommend?
¿Algo más? – Anything else?
¿Aceptan tarjetas de crédito? – Do you take credit cards?
¿Nos trae la cuenta, por favor? – Could you bring us the bill, please?

This last question could also be simply:

La cuenta, por favor – The bill, please

Let’s go through them once more. Repeat after me.

Let’s start with the listening exercise. I’m going to say the five sentences in Spanish. Can you say them to me in English? Let’s start:

¿Algo más? – Anything else?
¿Qué nos recomienda? – What do you recommend?
¿Nos trae la cuenta, por favor? – Could you bring us the bill, please?
¿Tiene una mesa para dos? – Do you have a table for two?
¿Aceptan tarjetas de crédito? – Do you take credit cards?

Let’s now do a speaking drill. Don’t worry if you don’t get all the five sentences correctly the first time around. You’re supposed to do this exercise several times over the next few days and weeks. Come back to this podcast episode and do all the exercises here and eventually you’ll see how you can get all these sentences right, without even thinking about it.

So, let’s do the speaking drill. I’m going to say the five sentences in English. Can you say them to me in Spanish. Let’s start:

Do you take credit cards? – ¿Aceptan tarjetas de crédito?
Could you bring us the bill, please? – ¿Nos trae la cuenta, por favor?
Anything else? – ¿Algo más?
Do you have a table for two? – ¿Tiene una mesa para dos?
What do you recommend? – ¿Qué nos recomienda?
