Today, we’ve got a question from Paul, one of my newsletter subscribers.
Paul wants to know: ‘How do you interpret the word QUEDAR? I have come across this word in many different guises.’
And Paul is right. The verb ‘quedar’ has several meanings.

If you it look up ‘quedar’ in the dictionary, you’ll get:
- Remain or be left
- Be located
- Arrange to meet
- Suit or fit
And then there are dozens of expressions with this verb.
Today, I’m going to focus on the 4 main uses of the verb ‘quedar’.
Spanish verb QUEDAR – To remain, to be left
The first meaning is: ‘To remain or to be left’.
And here are two good examples:
There are only five left
And the second example is:
There are four potatoes left

The second main meaning of the verb ‘quedar’ is: to be located
Here are two good examples:
The supermarket is near here
The second example is:
It’s very far away
That’s to express where something is located.
Spanish verb QUEDAR – To arrange to meet
The third main meaning of the verb ‘quedar’ is: to arrange to meet.
So, for example, we could say:
We’ve arranged to meet at four o’clock
And another example is:
Have you arranged to meet them?

The fourth main meaning of the verb ‘quedar’ is: to suit or to fit.
For example, we could say:
These shoes don’t fit me
And we could also say:
That shirt suits you great
