Today we’ve got another great question about verbs.

Today’s question comes from Darleen, one of my Facebook followers. Darleen says: “I’m slowly learning the main irregular verbs. I like the lessons where you go through just one verb in one tense, and then have some drills. Could we have another one of those?”

Knowing some of the irregular verbs well is one of a few things that can boost your conversation skills really fast. There are a handful of verbs you should make an effort to learn early on. Today, we’re going to see another one of them.

See also: Maria’s step-by-step Spanish courses.

It’s the verb PODER, ‘can’ or ‘to be able to’. You’ll find this verb even in the most basic sentences, and you’ll hear it all the time.

Spanish verb PODER: let’s learn it

In this lesson, we’re going to learn the present tense. The most common one of all. I’m going to say the six forms. Repeat them after me:

puedo – I can – puedo
puedes – you (singular) can – puedes
puede – he/she/it can – puede
podemos – we can – podemos
podéis – you (plural) can – podéis
pueden – they can – pueden

Let’s say them once more. Say them after me:

Spanish verb PODER: listening drill

Now, let’s do a listening drill. Can you tell me what these forms mean in English?

puede – puede – he/she/it can
podemos – podemos – we can
puedo – puedo – I can
pueden – pueden – they can
puedes – puedes – you (singular) can
podéis – podéis – you (plural) can
