Spanish Speaking Practice: Build Sentences with Poner, Dar, Ver, Salir

¡Hola! Welcome back to my free podcast ‘Speak Spanish with Maria Fernandez’. Today, we’re going to focus on building sentences with four essential irregular verbs: PONER (to put), DAR (to give), VER (to see), and SALIR (to go out), all in the present tense.
First we’re going to practise conjugating the verb PONER (to put) in the present tense. Then you’re going to build five short sentences with PONER. And after that we’ll practise the other three verbs.

Verb number 1: PONER – to put:
This is how you conjugate the verb PONER in the present tense:
pongo – I put
pones – you [tú] put
pone – he/she/it puts
ponemos – we put
ponéis – you [vosotros] put
ponen – they put
Drill: Practising PONER
1 I put the books on the shelf.
Translation: Pongo los libros en la estantería.
2 They put the dishes in the dishwasher.
Translation: Ponen los platos en el lavaplatos.
3 We put the keys here.
Translation: Ponemos las llaves aquí.
4 You [tú] put the keys on the table.
Translation: Pones las llaves en la mesa.
5 Where do you [vosotros] put it?
Translation: ¿Dónde lo ponéis?
Verb number 2: DAR – to give:
This is how you conjugate the verb DAR in the present tense:
doy – I give
das – you [tú] give
da – he/she/it gives
damos – we give
dais – you [vosotros] give
dan – they give
Drill: Practising DAR
1 You [tú] give your friend a present.
Translation: Das un regalo a tu amigo.
2 She never gives me anything.
Translation: Nunca me da nada.
3 You [vosotros] give me two.
Translation: Me dais dos.
4 They give her water.
Translation: Le dan agua.
5 I give my opinion.
Translation: Doy mi opinión.

Verb number 3: VER – to see:
This is how you conjugate the verb VER in the present tense:
veo – I see
ves – you [tú] see
ve – he/she/it sees
vemos – we see
veis – you [vosotros] see
ven – they see
Drill: Practising VER
1 She sees her friends every weekend.
Translation: Ve a sus amigos todos los fines de semana.
2 He sees the problem.
Translation: Ve el problema.
3 We see the mountains from here.
Translation: Vemos las montañas desde aquí.
4 You [vosotros] see the solution.
Translation: Veis la solución.
5 They see him every Friday.
Translation: Le ven todos los viernes.
Verb number 4: SALIR – to go out:
This is how you conjugate the verb SALIR in the present tense:
salgo – I go out
sales – you [tú] go out
sale – he/she/it goes out
salimos – we go out
salís – you [vosotros] go out
salen – they go out
Drill: Practising SALIR
1 I go out with my friends on Fridays.
Translation: Salgo con mis amigos los viernes.
2 We go out for dinner once a week.
Translation: Salimos a cenar una vez a la semana.
3 You [tú] go out early.
Translation: Sales temprano.
4 You [vosotros] go out to the theatre often.
Translation: Salís al teatro a menudo.
5 She goes out to exercise every day.
Translation: Sale a hacer ejercicio todos los días.

Final Drill: Combining PONER, DAR, VER, and SALIR
Now that we’ve practised each verb separately, let’s combine all four into one final drill. I’ll say ten sentences in English. Can you say them to me in Spanish? Let’s start:
1 I put my books on the table.
Translation: Pongo mis libros en la mesa.
2 You [tú] give me water.
Translation: Me das agua.
3 He sees that it’s raining.
Translation: Ve que está lloviendo.
4 We go out with two friends.
Translation: Salimos con dos amigos.
5 They put their clothes on the chair.
Translation: Ponen su ropa en la silla.
6 She never gives them anything.
Translation: Nunca les da nada.
7 You [tú] see him on Wednesdays.
Translation: Le ves los miércoles.
8 I go out this afternoon.
Translation: Salgo esta tarde.
9 We see the park from our house.
Translation: Vemos el parque desde nuestra casa.
10 You [vosotros] give them coffee.
Translation: Les dais café.
