Today’s question comes from Sarah, one of my Facebook followers. Sarah contacted me to ask: “Do all masculine nouns in Spanish end in ’o’?”
There are indeed many, many Spanish masculine nouns that end in ‘o’. But there are also many that end in other letters like: r, l, n, e, z, s. And even in ‘a’.
In this lesson, I bring you ten masculine nouns that end in the letter: Z (the last letter of the alphabet).
Let’s hear those ten masculine nouns. Repeat after me:
el antifaz – the eye mask
el aprendiz – the apprentice
el arroz – the rice
el avestruz – the ostrich
el capataz – the foreman
el disfraz – the disguise
el juez – the judge
el lápiz – the pencil
el maíz – the corn, the maize
el pez – the fish
Let’s say those 10 masculine nouns again. Repeat after me.
Here’s a learning tip: To get the gender of Spanish nouns always right, make sure you learn all new nouns with their article. Even if they are masculine nouns ending in ‘o’. When you learn nouns with their article, you soon get used to putting that article and noun together, and you never make gender mistakes.
And now, let’s do a listening drill. Can you tell me what these 10 masculine nouns mean?
el lápiz – the pencil
