In this lesson from my Spanish course, you’re going to learn how to build the six forms of all -AR verbs in the future tense.

-AR verbs are the most common verbs in Spanish.

I’m going to use the verb HABLAR (to speak), as a pattern for all other -AR verbs.

Knowing the six forms of the verb HABLAR (to speak) in the future tense, allows you to build the future tense forms of all other -AR verbs. Including the irregular -AR verbs.

These are the six future tense forms of the verb HABLAR:

hablaré
I will speak

hablarás
you (tú) will speak

hablará
he/she/it will speak

hablaremos
we will speak

hablaréis
you (vosotros) will speak

hablarán
they will speak

Once you know these six forms well, you’ll be able to build the future tense of all -AR verbs.

Let’s hear them once more.

So, how do you build the future tense of –AR verbs?

This is how you build the future tense of all Spanish verbs ending in AR:

All you need to do is add the following endings to the infinitive.

In our example, the infinitive is HABLAR (to speak).

For the YO form, you add an é – hablaré (I will speak)

For the TU form, you add á-s, hablarás (you [tú] will speak)

For the EL, ELLA, USTED form, you add an á, hablará (he/she/it will speak)

For the NOSOTROS form, you add e-m-o-s, hablaremos (we will speak)

For the VOSOTROS form, you add é-i-s, hablaréis (you [vosotros] will speak)

For the ELLOS, ELLAS, USTEDES form, you add á-n, hablarán (they will speak)

Let’s go through it once more.

To help you master these six forms, we’re going to do a listening and a speaking drill.

Let’s do a listening drill.

Can you tell me which verb form is being said? I’ll give you the right answer after the gap:

hablaremos
we will speak

hablarás
you (tú) will speak

hablaré
I will speak

hablarán
they will speak

hablará
he/she/it will speak

hablaréis
you (vosotros) will speak

Let’s do this listening drill again.

And now we’re going to do a speaking drill.
