Today’s question comes from Karen, one of my newsletter subscribers. Karen emailed me to ask whether I could do another conversation lesson.
As you know, getting you to speak Spanish is the main goal of these audio lessons. So, today I bring you another conversation from my course: Learn Spanish At Your Own Pace.
Some of the words in today’s conversation have come up in previous lessons. For instance: buenos días, tiene, mesa, cinco, lo siento, completo, volver, hora.
I’m going to play today’s conversation at real speed. The first few times you hear it, you may not understand some of the words you’ve learned before. Don’t worry. Understanding words in conversation is much more difficult than understanding them on their own.
As you hear the conversation in this lesson more and more times, and say it out loud, you’ll soon understand all the words.
Let’s hear the two-line conversation:
• Buenos días, ¿tiene una mesa para cinco?
• Lo siento, está completo. ¿Pueden volver dentro de una hora?
Let’s hear it again.
And here’s the translation:
• Buenos días, ¿tiene una mesa para cinco?
• Good morning, do you have a table for five?
• Lo siento, está completo. ¿Pueden volver dentro de una hora?
• I’m sorry, we’re full. Can you come back in an hour?
Let’s hear the conversation once more.
Do you notice how it doesn’t feel so fast any more?

And now, listen to the conversation while you read the transcript:
• Buenos días, ¿tiene una mesa para cinco?
• Lo siento, está completo. ¿Pueden volver dentro de una hora?
Let’s now say it out loud. Repeat the lines after the speakers:
• Buenos días, ¿tiene una mesa para cinco?
• Lo siento, está completo. ¿Pueden volver dentro de una hora?
Let’s say it again.
Can you say it one last time?
Now, without looking at the transcript, listen to the conversation for the last time today. Do you notice the difference from the first time you heard it?
• Buenos días, ¿tiene una mesa para cinco?
• Lo siento, está completo. ¿Pueden volver dentro de una hora?

When I was learning English, I used to do exercises like this on a daily basis. Sometimes I’d do them for just a few minutes. But I made sure I practiced speaking on a regular basis. Regular practice is the secret to becoming fluent in a language.
