Today’s question comes from Mark, one of my students. Mark asked me not long ago whether I could teach him the names of some countries in Spanish. So, we looked at the atlas, and went through the countries he wanted to learn. That got me thinking, and I created this lesson where I bring you 10 countries in Spanish.
These are the 10 countries you’re going to master today. Repeat after me:
Australia :: Australia
Canadá :: Canada
Escocia :: Scotland
España :: Spain
Estados Unidos :: United States
Inglaterra :: England
Irlanda :: Ireland
Japón :: Japan
México :: Mexico
Reino Unido :: United Kingdom
When saying those countries, make sure you’re pronouncing the vowels correctly: a e i o u.
Also, watch out for the A-U in Australia.
Notice that Canadá has the stress on the last A: Canadá.
And practice saying the double R in Inglaterra and Reino Unido.
Let’s say those 10 countries again. Repeat after me:
Australia :: Australia
Canadá :: Canada
Escocia :: Scotland
España :: Spain
Estados Unidos :: United States
Inglaterra :: England
Irlanda :: Ireland
Japón :: Japan
México :: Mexico
Reino Unido :: United Kingdom
And now, let’s do a listening drill. Can you tell me what these words mean?
Japón :: Japan

When I was studying English, I had a world map where I used to write the names of the countries as I learned them. And, underneath each country, I would write the word for its people: American, British, Spanish, Australian, Japanese, and so on. It felt a bit like travelling, and discovering the world.
To continue discovering the world in Spanish, I’m going to bring you the words for some nationalities. And you’re going to practice saying where you’re from.
