Today’s question comes from Margaret, one of my Facebook followers. Margaret contacted me to say: “I wonder whether all Spanish feminine nouns end in ’a’ Are there any that don’t?”
There are indeed plenty of Spanish feminine nouns that end in a letter other than ‘a’. Today, I’m going to give ten very common ones.
Let’s hear those ten feminine nouns. Repeat after me:
la pared
the wall
la gente
the people
la llave
the key
la piel
the skin
la canción
the song
la mano
the hand
la flor
the flower
la crisis
the crisis
la ley
the law
la luz
the light
Let’s say those 10 feminine nouns again. Repeat after me.
Remember this learning tip I’ve given you before: The easiest way to get the gender of Spanish nouns always right, is to learn all new nouns with their article. Even if they are feminine nouns ending in ‘a’. Learning nouns with their article helps you get used to putting that article and noun together in a natural way. And so you avoid the frustration of making basic gender mistakes.
And now, let’s do a listening drill. Can you tell me what these 10 feminine nouns mean?
